Norwich University of the Arts

Norwich University of the Arts is a dynamic and creative community providing arts, design and media education. Students have voted NUA as the best specialist arts, design and media university in the UK in the National Student Survey 2014 for the second year running.

NUA was established in Norwich’s St Georges Street in 1845 as the Norwich School of Design to provide design education for local industries. The founders included artists and followers of the Norwich School, the only provincial British group to establish an international reputation for landscape painting. The institution has been at the heart of Norwich’s cultural community for generations and in 2012 was formally granted University status. NUA has been named as the winner of the Excellence and Innovation in the Arts Award at the Times Higher Education Awards (2014) and praised for world leading research in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. 92% of NUA graduates went on to employment or further education within six months of graduating (Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education 2013/14).

The university campus comprises seven buildings in and around the pedestrianised St. Georges Street, in the centre of Norwich. Each space has its own identity including the recently renovated Duke Street Building, which houses the library; the Monastery Media Lab, a world-class digital design centre; The Garth, a converted 13th century monastic remain and now the new centre for photography; the Guntons Design and Fashion studios; and St. Georges with the traditional high ceilings and huge windows making it the ideal studio space for Fine Art. The result is an extraordinary, inspirational and unique creative environment.

The Gallery has a respected reputation for its annual programme of exhibitions and events. It is at the heart of the cultural life of the University and the city, while attracting a wide national and international audience. Not only is it an important touring venue that has hosted national and international exhibitions such as Colin Self, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Jerwood Contemporary Painters and Jake & Dinos Chapman, it also provides students with Degree Show space and is a valuable resource for installation and curating experience.

The library houses the largest specialist art, design and media collection in the Eastern region, including 33,000 books, subscriptions to over 400 journals, over 800 DVDs and an extensive bank of electronic resources. Workspaces include access to networked computers and group study areas.

Portable equipment for location filming including lighting sets, dolly kits, film and digital video and audio recording kits with relevant accessories.

NUA holds a current Erasmus Charter which means that students can benefit from an accredited period of study abroad as part of their degree. Students can take between 3 months and 1 year of their course in a European study destination as part of the British Council Erasmus programme, and each year there are a number of opportunities for students to undertake exchanges to approved European partner universities with the benefit of Erasmus funding support.

Undergraduate courses include BAs in Animation, Design, Fashion, Film, Illustration to Architecture, Photography, Textiles and Games Art.
