Understanding the Russell Group

Are you a university hopeful at the start of your application journey? Have you heard the term ‘Russell Group’ being thrown around by teachers and fellow students, or come across it online, but are a little unsure on what it actually means? Here is a brief outline on what it means for a university to be a Russell Group university and what institutions are included in this group.

There are 166 universities across the United Kingdom and 24 of these are part of the Russell Group. All members of the group are involved in conducting world-class research and have a reputation for academic excellence. Four of the top ten universities in the world at the moment are Russell Group members - Imperial College London at 2nd place, the University of Oxford at 3rd, the University of Cambridge at 5th, and University College London at 9th.

The full list of Russell Group universities is listed below in alphabetical order. Simply click on their name to access the university’s website and find out more about that particular institution.

Recently, here at UK University Search, we ran an extensive webinar series entitled ‘Meet the Russell Group’ to provide students with an overview of the ins and outs of applying to and attending a Russell Group university. Topics such as personal statements, student life and applying to Oxbridge were covered extensively in these webinars. They are all linked below and are definitely worth checking out to get some more information on the group and guidance on applying to a university within it!
