Introducing ‘The Music Box’

A state of the art building developed specifically for London College of Creative Media, The Music Box will offer a truly impressive and inspiring space across six floors to study, create, perform, record and collaborate. The new building (due to open it’s doors this September) will also include its own venue dedicated to hosting exclusive gigs, masterclasses, seminars, product launches and other events, giving students extraordinary experiences and direct access to a range of relevant industry networks. It combines inspirational architecture and outstanding interiors to create a unique new landmark for Southwark.

Most importantly, LCCM students at the Music Box will benefit from a social environment deliberately designed to encourage and support the development of collaborative projects across the college’s three integrated schools of creative study.

Breaking away from the standardised, regimented and infuriatingly inflexible courses, LCCM is bringing a more creative attitude to crafting the careers of young, creative minds. By stretching their remit to include more creative fields than ever - and by moving into a brand new, state of the art building with plenty of top quality facilities - the higher education institute aims to give students a free-flowing, expansive education that doesn’t just play by the rules.

Now, more than ever before, a wider range of subjects will be on offer for students who will be able to pick and choose exactly what they study so that they can get the most out of their time at LCCM. Following a rebrand (having previously been named London College of Contemporary Music) the college has expanded into fields such as creative writing, digital product development and music industry management while retaining its pre-existing range of highly-acclaimed music courses.

As well as diversifying, LCCM is set to move into a new home at ‘The Music Box’ - a purpose built new creative space with studios, a live music venue, practice rooms and collaborative spaces over six floors, designed by Architect Trevor Morris at SPPARC and developed together with Taylor Wimpey Central London. With this creative hub right on London’s Southbank at their disposal students will be given the opportunity to work on top-of-the-range equipment and learn from acclaimed industry leaders.

LCCM Principal Darius Khwaja explains: “In 2012 higher education in the UK saw profound changes to how it was funded. This was felt most acutely by undergraduates looking to study arts, social sciences and humanities. As a result, students and parents are right to ask what they are getting for their money. At LCCM we make sure our students an industry-relevant, academic education that retains its value throughout every stage of their careers.”Students will be taught by tutors who have experience working alongside a diverse range of artists such as Sting, Van Morrison, Ian Dury, Ray Charles, Sugababes, Paul Weller, Tom Jones, Paloma Faith and many more. LCCM alumni have gone on to work at Universal, Virgin Records, Samsung Electronics and Sky TV.

Music graduates have gone on to sign recording and publishing deals with Island Records, Sony, Relentless and Decca. They have featured on BBC Radio 1 and SBTV, supported Jess Glynne, perform in George Ezra’s band and even perform at the London 2012 Olympics since studying at LCCM.

Former pupil and now Sky News/Sky Sports presenter Tom Macleod describes his LCCM experience: “I had three great and fun years at LCCM with some of London’s best musicians teaching me. While I moved away from music and into broadcasting, I still learned valuable skills from LCCM you would not initially link to my current job as a news presenter. Performing under pressure, being in front of an audience, and hours of practice and preparation all play a daily part in my job now and I started in music radio, which I wouldn’t have started working in had I not been at music college!”

LCCM is the UK's only specialist independent higher education college for creative people offering industry-led degrees in music, words, code and creative entrepreneurship. Next Open Day: Saturday 20th May 2017. Register HERE or visit www.lccm.org.uk for more information.
